A Quick Refresher: Link to a Specific Page or Destination in a PDF Document

Web Design & Development

This is a trick I hadn’t used in a couple of years until just the other day. You can create a hyperlink to a specific page in a PDF by appending #page=3 to the URL. For example, if I want to link to page 35 of “SharePoint-Magazine-Issue-2.pdf” on my website, the link would be http://joshmccarty.com/ … /SharePoint-Magazine-Issue-2.pdf#page=35.

Note: This only works for PDF files hosted on the web, not for file:// links to PDF files on the computer’s file system.

If you want to link to a specific section of a PDF regardless of the page number (for example if the PDF is updated frequently and page numbers may change), you have to first create a “destination” and then append #destination to the link. Adobe’s documentation has more details.
